CCE were delighted to be involved in the construction of the UK’s first Rare Diseases Centre for Children, along with a combined inpatient and outpatient Oncology and Haematology Centre, offering world-class care in a bright and comfortable environment; featuring single en-suite rooms, play areas and a teenage common room for cancer patients.

The new building, constructed on the site of a former multi-storey car park and delivered under the P21+ initiative, is a 5-storey steel frame construction with significant cantilevered bays, deep lattice structures and hung floor plates.

The required spatial arrangements presented numerous unique design and construction challenges, one being foundation structures, which consist of piles with numerous transfer beams in order to avoid obstructions that resulted from existing plan and retaining walls from the former car park structure.
